This hopeful romantic loved it!
By Christina Boyd
I own all Abigail Reynold's adaptations and am a huge fan. This one definitely is a departure from Darcy, Elizabeth, Mr. Bennet and even Georgianna's characters as we have all grown to know and love. Still, I enjoyed this clever take on what could have happened if. My favorite line in the book occurs in Chapter 3 when Darcy brings Bingley to see Jane in London: " 'Miss Bennet, it was not generous of me. I wanted to give you all that is mine, but to my misfortune, I discovered that I only possessed two things which you wanted: another chance for Mr. Bingley and your sister, and a book.' ... His voice carried finality as he raised her hand to his lips and kissed it lightly, trying to store the sensation to memory." Abigail Reynold's is a master at toying with our romantic sensibilities and this courageous departure from the original novel has much to recommend.

Four stars plus two stars divided by two equals three stars from me!
By J. Lesley
I gave in to temptation and ordered all five of these Pride and Prejudice variations at one time. I have been allowing some time to elapse between reading each book because basically they are all telling the same story, just with "variations". From this point on, there is information in my review which some may consider spoilers.

This book, BY FORCE OF INSTINCT, was well written and pleasant to read. I have rated it with three stars because it just did not rise to the level of a four star book for me consistently enough. I enjoyed it but I also began to lose patience with it and wondered why the author continued to write when she had essentially solved the problem for the two main characters.

Our story begins just after Elizabeth Bennet has read the letter from Fitzwilliam Darcy explaining his feelings and misgivings about her and the true happenings between his family and Wickham. Elizabeth is mortified to know that she has misjudged Darcy so terribly and just wants to retreat into some private place to recover emotionally from what she now knows. But she will not be allowed to do that. Due to family commitments Darcy is unable to leave Rosings Park immediately as he had planned. He has to stay on for another week and he and Elizabeth are together frequently. It is an extremely trying time for both of them.

All of the Reynolds "variations" are explorations of what might have happened to these two people if just one circumstance had changed. In this book Elizabeth and Darcy are thrown together enough after "the letter" to give them a chance to view each other more realistically. I was actually fine with the book until it began to portray characters in such completely unfamiliar roles that they made me uncomfortable. Georgiana is an insecure, spoiled brat. I realize that she is a 16 year old girl but in those times she was old enough to be considered eligible for marriage so this was not a favorable aspect of her personality for me. She does something spiteful which causes a huge problem for Elizabeth and Darcy. Too much character deviation for my taste. Mr. Bennet makes a conscious effort to dislike Darcy, even after Elizabeth tries desperately to convince him of her love for Darcy and his innate goodness. I didn't understand Mr. Bennet's pigheadedness and the author didn't help me understand. Once again, too much character deviation for my taste. Elizabeth's Uncle Gardner played a pivitol role in the engagement but he was shown to be a very harsh, stern, immoveable person. Yet again, too much character deviation for my taste.

And now we come to the sexual content of the book. Never, in my wildest dreams would I imagine Elizabeth Bennet initiating a sexual encounter with Fitzwilliam Darcy but that is exactly what this book portrays her as doing. And from then until the final pages of the book it is just one time after another of the author describing these characters trying to keep their hands off each other and not always succeeding. Okay, this is not Pride and Prejudice, this is a story written by another author, b-u-t I didn't like this aspect of the book. One incident, maybe. On and on, no. They do get married I'm glad to say but that just seemed to reveal Darcy as being totally insecure. I wasn't prepared for him to need so much reassuring by Elizabeth that she loved him. And this book just contains one misunderstanding after another (indulged in equally by both characters which at least made it different from other romances).

My bottom line is this: if you enjoy reading historical romantic fiction, you will like this book. If you are a stickler for the straight and narrow Pride and Prejudice, you will not like this book. If you find yourself somewhere in between, you will enjoy parts of it and get really frustrated (and bored) by other parts of it. Three stars? Yes, it went up to a four star level sometimes and dipped down to a two star level during other portions. I did the math and came up with three stars!

A joy to read
By Mrs. Sandra Platt
Amidst the quantity of P&P inspired books being published there is certainly a wide variation in quality.

Not, however, where Abigail Reynolds is concerned. I have read all her Regency variations and there is noone else who comes close to her standard. She is consistently brilliant!

This is again another wonderful 'what if' tale that continues with our two favourite characters detained in each other's company at Rosings. Learning to understand each other under the eye of a refreshingly written normal (ie teenage and slightly spoilt) Georgiana and a host of other relatives, the story draws you in and once again enthralls you with Abigail's grasp on her characters and their interactions.

If you are seeking a P&P variation that is of the highest quality in every respect, then buy this one. I have read it several times, and I am sure that you will too!

First Impression.
By Anthony Wallace
Just started into this book so haven't finished playing thru it yet. But I will give you my first impression based on what I have completed thus far. The tablature seams accurate so far to the CD that comes with it. The coaching between sections does add value and helped with the learning curve. I especially like the coaching. This book is not for "method" beginners. Although by going through the tabs one could mimic what is happening on each track. I would recommend this book for those who are learning fretboard theory (ie Major scale, Minor scale, Pentatonic Scales, and Blues scales, modals) this book would make a great addition to your lesson plan. With this book you can see these scales applied masterfully. It does not have play thru songs like a play along book might. This book breaks up songs into smaller sections and gives tips on things like hand postioning, techique etc. So far I am enjoying this book.

Bonamassa, blues heir prince

Joe Bonamassa is at the apex of blues guitar as we know it today. I figure any ounce of that knowledge is something I would hope to acquire for myself. This book is presented in a easy to follow "building block" format. Thus, allowing the guitarist glean bits and pieces.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8-10-Sixteen-year-old Ann has a big problem. She has just two months to get into a bridesmaid dress for her Aunt Jackie's wedding. She needs to lose 45 pounds, which would be hard enough without the complications of a new job, a cute boy, a mean group of girls, and blended families that leave her caught in the middle-and left out. Her mother is obsessive about her own weight and as the summer wears on, Ann begins to see just how troubled her families are. Telling the story in Ann's wry, realistic voice, this debut author effectively captures society's preoccupation with size and the resulting alienation of an overweight teen. With a chain-smoking grandmother whose language is peppered with "fat-ass," relatives and friends who are slyly disparaging about her weight, and a mother who constantly prods her about dieting, the message could be heavy-handed. But Barson lightens the tone with almost cinematic humor, ensuring that even the most painful scenes have a slapstick edge. The ticking clock behind the wedding deadline gives the story real momentum, and while the ending is all nuptial jubilation, it is also a realistic summer's end for Ann.-Martha Baden, Prescott Public Library, AZα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Sixteen-year-old Ann has dieted plenty of times before, but her aunt’s wedding—looming just eight weeks away—compels her to secretly shell out for the Secrets 2 Success weight-loss system, which delivers icky frozen dinners right to her home. Barson’s lighthearted debut mixes pratfalls with serious emotional issues. Mostly it focuses on Ann’s struggles to escape the unhealthy relationship to food she has learned from her mother, figure out who her real friends are, and curtail her self-sabotage and let loose with life. Hey, maybe she will even score a date with Dimple Guy. (Though puking on his shoes—classic!—doesn’t help much.) Nothing you haven’t read before, but thoroughly warmhearted and easy to like. Grades 7-10. --Daniel Kraus

Review
"With both humor and debth, the story of Ann's resilience, determination, and strength will inspire readers on their own journey toward a sparkly new life." --Susane Colasanti, author of Keep Holding On

"You'll love this book so much that you'll wish you had a friend like Ann." --Cynthia Leitich Smith, New York Times bestselling author

"Deliciously relatable, with a lot of laughter on the side." -- Rita Williams-Garcia, New York Times best-selling author

* "Barson offers up a powerful and poignant novel about hope and love in the midst of common and controversial issues about weight gain, weight loss, and the ability to persevere despite our flaws and predispositions to “eating,” or not eating, our emotions. It is a book readers will not want to wait to finish, and when it is done, they will pick it up again." --VOYA, starred review

Brilliant Debut
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
Weight issues in YA are generally really poorly handled. In fact, I can only think of a couple of heroines who aren't very skinny. Considering what a big issue weight is in American society, it's rather startling how few books there are that take that perspective and deal with it in an open, feeling, non-shaming way, and the only book I can think of aside from 45 Pounds is The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson, which isn't remotely our society. Though I know there are some others I haven't read, 45 Pounds is still a much-needed book that takes a heartbreaking look at insecurities, where they come from, and what to do about them.

K. A. Barson's debut novel has incredibly strong characterization. From page one, Ann's personality shines through. She's rather funny and intelligent, but, more than anything, she's a mound of insecurities and self-hatred. If, like me, you hated pretty much everything about yourself at some point in your life, you will feel for Ann; I ached and part of me was right back in that place. If you never went through that, I suspect it will be really hard to really comprehend how Ann could think that way about herself. From my own experiences, Ann's thought patterns are wholly accurate. They are also frustrating. She makes so many bad choices, but not for the sake of the plot, the sort of well meaning bad choices that are a part of growing up.

Ann really does have a problem with food, and Barson shows this very well. The root of Ann's dietary issues stem from her family. Any stressful situation sends her to the food, a response programmed into her from childhood, one she can't quit, though she wants to. Unhappy with the way she looks, Ann tries fad diet after fad diet, losing a few pounds and then falling off the wagon. These diets aren't sustainable, so she can never stick to them. I've seen this same issue with friends who try to follow this or that diet. They work, but they're so strict that they're not manageable long term.

With regards to weight, Barson's messages are very positive, if slightly preachy. She promotes health above all, and happiness. Ultimately, the most successful diets will be ones of moderation, but of real, day-to-day food. Also, when Ann really comes to dieting, she comes at it from both a personal and a psychological standpoint, rather than just the desire to look better, which tends to be outweighed by the deliciousness of burgers and the ease of not exercising. Barson emphasizes that a person cannot be forced to change their thinking, and that putting too much pressure, one way or another, on someone's diet is liable to make things worse rather than better. What's great too is that, though Ann does want to lose weight and be skinny and pretty, her goal weight is actually always set a couple of pounds above the high end of "healthy weights" for her height, showing that those are just numbers and that varies from person to person.

For readers who have been disappointed by the lack of familiar focus in young adult fiction, 45 Pounds has a very strong focus on that. Ann's parents are divorced, and she lives with her mother, step-father, and twin siblings. Her brother, Tony, fought with both sets of parents and has been a no-show since he left for college. Ann has huge issues with her mother. Though her mother really does care, she ends up being a really unhealthy influence on Ann and the kids. It's a great example of how even loving families and good intentions can come out skewed. The resolution between Ann and her mother was really satisfyingly handled.

On top of that, there's also a wonderful aspect that deals with friendship. First of all, I am happy to inform you that Ann isn't a social outcast because she's a size 17. In fact, most people are really nice to her and like her; she's not popular, but she can sit at just about any lunch table she wants. So many authors make the fat kid an outcast, but that's really not always the case, and not a healthy attitude to model. Anyway, Ann's best friend, Cassie, changed schools, which has led to them growing apart. At her summer job, Ann has befriend Raynee, a much more popular girl. Watching those two form a bond as they realized just how terribly their supposed best friends treated them was touching.

Even more exciting on some levels, Ann actually gets a boy! A cute one, at least to her, though I suspect from a couple of hints that he's likely not model hot or anything like that. He sounds like a sweet, average boy to me. She meets the boy on her first day at work when she messes up his pretzel, and he's so polite and kind about that. He never looks down on Ann for her weight, but he's also not a manicpixiedreamboy, because he's sort of awkward and really takes his time about things. Their romance is kept on the backburner to the rest of the plot, but I found it convincing and really liked the moral that there's someone for everyone. All guys aren't attracted to thin girls, and I say this as someone who has sat in on guy talk on multiple occasions. Though generally I don't think romance needs to be in every book, I'm very glad there was one here.

My one reservation with 45 Pounds is that some plot elements did seem to disappear or not get as fully resolved as I would have liked. For example, there was a big build up of stuff with Ann's brother, but very little actually happens with that. Similarly, Ann's father and his step-family comes up a couple of times, but I felt like there should have been more to it. These are very minor issues and were not huge detractors.

K. A. Barson's debut is full of heart and encourages both healthy diets and relationships. Barson tackles weight issues in a sympathetic way, while also covering themes of friendship and family. 45 Pounds is an excellent novel for young adults, both well-written and well-characterized.

A wonderful YA contemporary novel full of courage, heart, and depth
By Christina (Ensconced in Lit)
I unexpectedly received this book in the mail a few days ago from Penguin Teen and was curious about it, so immediately picked it up. This is my favorite kind of book-- I go in with no expectations, and come out, moved.

45 Pounds by K.A. Barson is about every girl Ann, who is overweight, wears a size 17, and is incredibly embarrassed about it. She has a stick thin perfect mother who has apparently never worried about weight her entire life, and has difficulty making new friends. She's struggled through many different diets, but this one is different-- her aunt has a wedding coming up, and Ann is determined to fit into a cute bridesmaid dress. This all seems very stereotypical to teen literature, but this book takes a generic idea and makes it new.

I admit that the first 100 pages were very painful for me to read on so many different levels. Ann is the perfect teen protagonist-- very insecure with many flaws, but with so much room to grow. She's like any of us were when we were at the awkward teenager stage where all we wanted to do was belong. I'll be honest-- I almost wanted to put it down because reliving those years was not my idea of relaxation. But then midway, something changes. Ann realizes that her sphere is larger than just around herself and that everyone has their own history, their own insecurities, their own fears. Barson introduces some really wonderful supporting characters-- Raynee, Ann's new friend, was probably my favorite of them all, and they take this book to a new level. The writing is crisp and the pacing makes absolute sense.

The resolution of this book is perfect-- and it brought tears to my eyes. In contemporary YA, the characters are the center of stories, and this book is chock full of it.

Overall, a book bursting through the seams with heart, courage, and depth that I was not expecting. A must read.

A great message about body image
By Christina Thurairatnam
I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book but I knew that I wanted to read it. I found myself really touched by Ann's struggles with both weight loss and other people's perceptions of her based on her size. The book also looked at friendships and family relationships which I really appreciated.

I found Ann to be easy to relate to as a character. There were definitely some moments where I really felt for her and could remember what it was like when I was a teen and people made comments about my weight or eating habits (I wasn't overweight but my relatives made comments anyway) or like Ann, I had those emotional fitting room scenes where clothes were too tight. I liked Ann's spunk and determination and I enjoyed watching her grow and discover more about herself and her family. It was great to see Ann decide to quit trying to fit her mom's ideal and work on being herself instead. Along the way she even makes a great friend in Rainee and finds a sweet love interest who likes her the way she is.

Overall I thought this book had a great message and great characters. The mom isn't portrayed as some villain. She genuinely cares for Ann but she doesn't have the healthiest attitude towards her body and she has passed that on to her daughters. She has her own issues to work on and while the end of the book doesn't wrap everything up with a bow, it does show that Ann and her mom are making progress in their relationship with each other and with food. There is also progress in mending broken family relationships. What I liked best is that the emphasis of the story is not on weight loss but on being healthy and being yourself rather than trying to fit someone else's concept of who you should be.

Theoretical Foundations of Chinese Medicine: Systems of Correspondence (Asian Science Series: No. 3), by Manfred Porkert

Although in the United States the scientific value of acupuncture is only now being clinically evaluated for the first time, needling is only one of a number of therapeutic disciplines which have proved effective in China for over two thousand years and which today provide common remedies for more than one quarter of the world's population. Why, asks Dr. Porkert, shouldn't medical men everywhere have access to the premises and results of this medical knowledge?

In this book he presents a coherent and systematic account of Chinese theories—the system of correspondence that underlies all of Chinese medicine—using a new and precise Latin terminology (with English equivalents provided for most terms) that he devised over the past decade. The book is based directly and exclusively on Chinese sources, including recent Chinese secondary literature.

Chapter 1 introduces the concepts that are the foundation of the system of correspondences—the polar combination yin-yang, which provides a basis for the analysis of all phenomena into complementary groups, and wu-hsing, which Dr. Porkert calls the "Five Evolutive Phases," and which are used to resolve cyclic processes into five temporally and qualitatively distinct parts. In Chapter 2 he takes up concepts which relate the body to the cosmos under the title "Phase Energetics" (yn-ch'i); these define meteorological, climatic, and immunological factors in health and disease. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on systems of concepts concerned with the body itself. The author has named these systems orbisiconography, sinarteriology, and foraminology. Orbisiconography (tsang-hsiang), the "imagery of functional orbs," describes the relationships of the functional systems within the body. It is not, as Dr. Porkert points out, analogous to but the opposite of Western comparative anatomy. Sinarteriology, the study of energetic conduits (ching-luo), and foraminology, the study of sensitive points (shu-hseh), indicate the functional relationships manifested at the body's surface as well as within it. The book's systematic description of these disciplines involved in acupuncture is a powerful antidote to basic misconceptions prevalent in earlier Western writing on the subject.

This is Volume III in the MIT East Asian Science series, edited by Nathan Sivin.

Review
"A classic presentation of the internal consistency of Chinese medicine. It is a book one can by in anticipation of rereading and studying it for many years."
—East-West Journal

"This work is especially noteworthy for its detailed discussions of the general theoretical foundations of Chinese cosmology and such philosophical and religious principles as yin-yang, the "five elements" (wu-hsing, or what Porkert translates as the "five evolutive phases") and ch'i (matter-energy)... [It] is important for its emphasis on the dynamic-functional nature of the medical system or what Joseph Needham has called the organismic time-centeredness of Chinese ideology. In short, this is an impressive piece of philosophical, medical, and philological scholarship and represents the first serious attempt to decipher some of the meaning and significance of traditional Chinese medicine."

The Performance of Becoming Human, by Daniel Borzutzky

Poetry. Latino/Latina Studies. 2016 National Book Award Winner. Following in the path of his acclaimed collections THE BOOK OF INTERFERING BODIES (Nightboat, 2011) and IN THE MURMURS OF THE ROTTEN CARCASS ECONOMY (Nightboat, 2015), Daniel Borzutzky returns to confront the various ways nation-states and their bureaucracies absorb and destroy communities and economies. In THE PERFORMANCE OF BECOMING HUMAN, the bay of Valparaiso merges into the western shore of Lake Michigan, where Borzutzky continues his poetic investigation into the political and economic violence shared by Chicago and Chile, two places integral to his personal formation. To become human is to navigate borders, including the fuzzy borders of institutions, the economies of privatization, overdevelopment, and underdevelopment, under which humans endure state-sanctioned and systemic abuses in cities, villages, deserts. Borzutzky, whose writing Eileen Myles has described as "violent, perverse, and tender" in its portrayal of a "kaleidoscopic journey of American horror and global horror," adds another chapter to a growing and important compendium of work that asks what it means to a be both a unitedstatesian and a globalized subject whose body is "shared between the earth, the state, and the bank."

"Like any good satirist, Borzutzky considers his subjectivity with the same lens he applies to the systems he critiques, and THE PERFORMANCE OF BECOMING HUMAN is an apogee of that inquiry. Since THE BOOK OF INTERFERING BODIES, Daniel Borzutzky has been the fabulist we most need because he's unafraid to detail the truth of our oligarchy, without pedantry. In his figurative world our bodies are forced through privatized meat grinders, but funnily in the way that all dark horror stories trigger our gallows humor. I'm thrilled every time Borzutzky brings a book in the world, learn the most about reality from him."―Carmen Giménez Smith

"In this canticle for the age of listicles, Daniel Borzutzky performs a new political poetry in the crucible of 'overdevelopment,' when 'The city has disappeared into the privatized cellar of humanity.' Here, the socially engaged bro-poet is mercifully broken, relieved of his epic monumentality, and with it of a range of foundational fictions (nation/family/language/subject), leaving behind these gut-cantos (songs/fragments), detestimonios of a spectral self, at once buzz-fed and cankerously/cantankerously embodied. (You can't spell 'Neruda' without 'nerd' and Canto General never rocked 'The Gross and Borderless Body.') The ugly majesty of these prose blocks echoes the windswept expanses of neoliberal Chile and Chicago, their dead and their debt, their surrender and struggle. To read 'this book that is a country deposited not in your heart but in your mouth' is to confront becoming human as speech act, as language game, and to know the freedom and the terror of doing so. The painbeauty of Borzutzky's virtuoso, multi- register flow (abject punchlines included) is also a counter-flow to the death drive of capital, sentences for a radical sentience."―Urayoán Noel

Review
"Borzutzky is aware that 'creative consultants waiting to turn this misery into poetry' are always waiting in the wings. This is in keeping with the broader Orwellian inversions and distracting gimcracks of the late capitalist police state he describes, where we sext and Skype and surf the experiences of others far away as authorities instruct us when to laugh and when to applaud. The dystopia here results from the very juxtaposition that is the hope of those migrants dying of thirst in the desert: a world of lack versus a world of absurdly overflowing plenty; a world numb-drunk on accumulated resources versus a world heightened in awareness by its own starvation. But that already romanticizes and reduced; Borzutzky is too clever, in any case, to speak for those who lack."—decomP

"Borzutzky's poetry is part Orwellian nightmare and part politicized call to arms regarding the very real state of the world. The bodies in his collection are bordered. They are have been conquered and militarized. They have been dumped into gulags to fester...Borzutzky manages to instill a hope in his readers that although we remain trapped in our putrid and failing bodies, we, too, will succeed in our spiritual mission to persevere."—American Microreviews & Interviews

"Daniel Borzutzky makes writing about bureaucratic nation-states interesting. We, as the reader, observe communities utterly destroyed, and we are left to question why and how and why and how humans let this happen. In particular, the bay of Valparaiso merges into the western shore of Lake Michigan, which exemplifies the horrors that happen on American soil and international soil alike—and how they are connected—and drawing the lines between the personal and political poignantly. This is a collection not to miss.”—Luna Luna

"The book, with its unflinching look at our corporatized lives and its condemning critique of the poet's role in it, makes a serious charge. We can choose for ourselves how to answer—but we each must answer."—Center for Literary Publishing

"What I loved best was the volume's secret insistence that we should not think of it as a typical book of discrete poems, presented in that all-too-familiar scroll show of a poet's various secretions, pressed down onto a series of microscope slides. No, there is something more, some controlling arc or vision."—The Brooklyn Rail

A heavily mixed collection, but holds extreme promise nonetheless
By C. D. Varn
Daniel Borzutsky's poetry here is breathless, dystopian, and largely stream of consciousness. Borzutsky's Chilean-Jewish background informs some of the poems which make narrative illusions and historical illusions rich in that history. His third volume of poetry, this particular choice for the National Book Award is interesting in that it deeply political, but almost feels like its from another time and aesthetic period than now. Borzutsky's long lines remind one of Whitman, but his blurring and convoluting of events, his dystopian settings, and his dark social commentary run contrary to that particular impulse. The title, an illusion to Kafka's "A Report to an Academy," informs us of the strange and familiar as well as the absurd and poignant or the gruesome and touching all cut through the work. It's intense, allusive, and deserves several readings, but that very intensity and primal scream element actually makes several readings somewhat hard. Not for the easily exhausted in either content or form, this is a book of poetry like Pasolini's Salo is a film: returning to it makes it richer, but its intensity makes that return daunting. One major criticism is that the intensity of the style and use of long lines makes poems blur together immediately after reading--this seems like an intended affect, but does make it hard to write about. Some changes in style or form could have made the collection a little less daunting. This poems are hard because life can hard, precarious, biting; and while not without humor, Borzutsky's humor is so dark that it isn't necessarily a relief. I am torn on this volume, but I will reading Borzutsky in the future.

Asking questions without question marks
By Glynn Young
“The Performance of Becoming Human” by Daniel Borzutzky won the 2016 National Book Award for poetry. Last year was a highly politicized year, and it’s no surprise that this award went to a collection that’s also highly politicized.

Borzutzky covers it all.

Refugees and immigrants. The environment. Third World sweatshops. (Do you know the people who made your t-shirt? Do you have a relationship with them? Borzutzky asks). Torture. Illegal aliens. Unsafe working conditions. Wastewater treatment plants. Malnourished children. Police issues. The production of garbage. Violence.

The style is simple and plain, leading to a more devastating critique, a more devastating impact.
As you read this generally long poems (the collections contains a total of 18 poems), you discover you have entered a dystopic world, or perhaps you’ve been living there all along, and these poems are forcing you to confront that reality. Here is one of the shorter poems in the collection, and at first it seems almost a break in the political narrative.

Dream Song #17

They took my body to the forest
They asked me to climb a ladder

I did not want to climb a ladder
But the forced me to climb the ladder

If you don’t climb the ladder
we will bury you in the mud

I had to decide should I die
by hanging or by burial

I climbed the ladder and they wrapped
a belt around the thick limb of a tree

And when I could no longer breathe
they tossed me into a stream

And I floated to the edge of the village
where someone prayed for my soul

It’s like this in a lullaby
for the end of the world:

The options for the end
are endless

But this is not really a lullaby
for the end of the world

It’s about the beginning
what happens when we start to rot

in the daylight
The way the light shines on

the ants and worms and parasites
loving our bodies

It’s about the swarms of dogs
gnawing our skin and bones

Do you know what it’s like
when a ghost licks your intestines

To avoid the hole
the children must sing sweetly, softly

To avoid the hole
they must fill their songs with love

When you consider the poem in its context in the collection, it assumes another kind of meaning. It follows a poem about Third World sweatshops, and it precedes a poem about torture and violence. And you realize that it is describing what happens to dissenters and especially in dictatorships (the poems include references to both Argentina’s Dirty War against the left wing from 1974 to 1983 and what happened in Chile with the fall of the Salvador Allende regime in 1973 (Borzutzky’s parents are from Chile).

Borzutzky has published a collection of stories, “Arbitrary Tales” (2005); three collections of poetry, including “The Ecstasy of Capitulation” (2007), “The Book of Interfering Bodies” (2011), and “The Performance of Becoming Human;” and four poetry chapbooks: “Failure in the Imagination” (2007); “In the Murmurs of the Rotten Carcass Economy” (2015); “Data Bodies” (2013); and “Bedtime Stories for the End of the World” (2015). He has translated several works by Chilean authors, including poet Jaime Luis Huenon and the fiction writer Juan Emas. He’s a professor at Wright College in Chicago.

“The Performance of Being Human” asks questions without question marks, questions about politics, about social issues, and about our humanity, what it means and what it can become, or has become.
