From Publishers Weekly
Freedman punctuates his discussion of the importance of buffalo to the Great Plains Indians with artwork from museums around the country. Ages 8-12.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up Freedman's book has two levels of appeal: that of the wonderfully conceived and vividly executed paintings (full-color reproductions of stunning paintings by such they-were-there artists as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Albert Bierstadt, uncluttered by inclusion of photographic every-detail), and that of an informative, accessible text. The title may by itself mislead some, as Freedman presents not a story or description of one hunt but descriptions of the many ways that buffalo hunts were madeby Indians, and later by the whites whose ferocious, firearm slaughter of the ``shaggies''as they were calledbrought the species to near extinction. This is superior to two recent picture books on the general subject of buffalo: Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Buffalo: the American Rison Today (Clarion, 1986) and Cary B. Ziter 's The Moon of Falling Leaves (Watts, 1988). A thundering success. George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield

Buffalo Hunt by R. Freeman: A review
By A Customer
Author, Russell Freeman, writes an informational (nonfiction) book targeting grades 3 - 7 about the interdependence of the Plains Indian Tribes and the North American Bison. This book documents a way of life few non-Indian people were privileged to see. The bison shaped the culture of these tribes, the tribes usually killed only what they needed and used all parts of the animal. The various tribes of the plains husbanded the bison herds and the land on which they grazed to insure the survival of this essential source of food and shelter. The buffalo hunt was accompanied by supplication to the spirits and shaman of the tribes and was participated in by all, though only men killed buffalo. The job of others was to clean the kill and cure the meat and hides. The author describes more than one hunting technique. Also, he explains how the Indians developed into skillful horsemen as they evolved from hunting on foot to the use of wild horses.
The slaughter of bison populations as whites encroached upon and gradually took over Indian lands resulted in the end of a way of life and the near annihilation of the Plains Indian Tribes in the 50+ years from around 1830 to 1888.
The book is illustrated with reproductions of original paintings and drawings of the period by artists such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer who were adventurer-artists traveling alone, or nearly so, through regions that only a few fur trappers and traders had seen before this time.
Freeman has crafted a book with a balanced combination of illustration and information. His book would surpass the most rigorous standards for great nonfiction. It presents information objectively and without bias or opinion and uses beautiful works of art for illustration - the art of both the white and the Indian, from the period under scrutiny. It explains a way of life that has been lost yet does not belabor the point, marginalize the people, or sentimentalize the topic. I would recommend this book highly. It could be used for art projects in schools as well as for factual writing assignments. The author has written other respected informational books for children, e.g., Lincoln: A photobiography, and another about the Wright brothers.

The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd

From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a #1New York Times bestselling novel about two unforgettable American women.

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world.

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.

As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women’s rights movements.

Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful’s cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better.

This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

Amazon.com Review
In the early 1830s, Sarah Grimk and her younger sister, Angelina, were the most infamous women in America. They had rebelled so vocally against their family, society, and their religion that they were reviled, pursued, and exiled from their home city of Charleston, South Carolina, under threat of death. Their crime was speaking out in favor of liberty and equality and for African American slaves and women, arguments too radically humanist even for the abolitionists of their time. Their lectures drew crowds of thousands, even (shockingly, then) men, and their most popular pamphlet directly inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom's Cabin--published 15 years later. These women took many of the first brutal backlashes against feminists and abolitionists, but even their names are barely known now. Sue Monk Kidd became fascinated by these sisters, and the question of what compelled them to risk certain fury and say with the full force of their convictions what others had not (or could not). She discovered that in 1803, when Sarah turned 11, her parents gave her the “human present” of 10-year-old Hetty to be her handmaid, and Sarah taught Hetty to read, an act of rebellion met with punishment so severe that the slave girl died of "an unspecified disease" shortly after her beating. Kidd knew then that she had to try to bring Hetty back to life (“I would imagine what might have been," she tells us), and she starts these girls' stories here, both cast in roles they despise. She trades chapters between their voices across decades, imagining the Grimk sisters’ courageous metamorphosis and, perhaps more vitally, she gives Hetty her own life of struggle and transformation. Few characters have ever been so alive to me as Hetty and Sarah. Long after you finish this book, you'll feel its courageous heart beating inside your own. -- Mari Malcolm

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Inspired by the true story of early-nineteenth-century abolitionist and suffragist Sarah Grimk, Kidd paints a moving portrait of two women inextricably linked by the horrors of slavery. Sarah, daughter of a wealthy South Carolina plantation owner, exhibits an independent spirit and strong belief in the equality of all. Thwarted from her dreams of becoming a lawyer, she struggles throughout life to find an outlet for her convictions. Handful, a slave in the Grimk household, displays a sharp intellect and brave, rebellious disposition. She maintains a compliant exterior, while planning for a brighter future. Told in first person, the chapters alternate between the two main characters’ perspectives, as we follow their unlikely friendship (characterized by both respect and resentment) from childhood to middle age. While their pain and struggle cannot be equated, both women strive to be set free—Sarah from the bonds of patriarchy and Southern bigotry, and Handful from the inhuman bonds of slavery. Kidd is a master storyteller, and, with smooth and graceful prose, she immerses the reader in the lives of these fascinating women as they navigate religion, family drama, slave revolts, and the abolitionist movement. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Beginning with her phenomenally successful debut, The Secret Life of Bees (2002), Kidd’s novels have found an intense readership among library patrons, who will be eager to get their hands on her latest one. --Kerri Price

Hugely disappointed in Oprah, not Sue Monk Kidd
By John P Lawrence
I want to add my voice to the legions who are disappointed in this purchase because of the Oprah comments. If I had known the book was going to be formatted this way, I NEVER would have bought it. EVER. Imagine sitting down to read one of your favorite authors, and just as the book is pulling you in, someone interrupts you. And then again. And again. It's HORRID. I wouldn't mind reading Ms. Winfrey's comments once I had a chance to enjoy the book and form my OWN impressions, but this is insulting. It speaks to the enormity of Ms. Winfrey's ego that she thinks her words are as important as the author's. I think Amazon should give all of us disgruntled customers a chance to buy another edition, and "credit" us the amount we spent on this travesty.

Oprah's notes interfere
By Reader
I would like to be able to eliminate Oprah's notes. They do not have importance to the interpretation of the text for this reader. Those comments get in the way of being able to read smoothly without interruption. I am really unhappy with the purchase of this e-book. I like the writing of Sue Monk Kidd and wish I had purchased this book in paper so that I could skip over Oprah's notes.

Kindle Version without Oprah's Notes is Available!
By mary gawne
I was able to purchase the Kindle version without Oprah's notes. Search for: The Invention of Wings A Novel Kindle Edition. The version named "The Invention of Wings: A Novel" is clean. Or go to the Oprah Book Club edition and click on the plus sign next to the Kindle Edition in the Formats box, which has the pricing for hardcover, audio, etc. Click on the picture of the book jacket to "Look Inside" to ensure that you are purchasing the copy without underlined passages and blue ink. This version is $11.99 as opposed to $11.24 for the version with Oprah's notes. Thanks to readers who posted this information. I would not have found this version without their help.

Mary K. Campbell was Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, where she taught biochemistry, general chemistry, and physical chemistry, as well as advised undergraduates working on biochemical research projects. Her avid interest in writing led to the publication of many highly successful editions of this textbook. Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Campbell received her Ph.D. from Indiana University and completed postdoctoral work in biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University. Her areas of interest included researching the physical chemistry of biomolecules, specifically, spectroscopic studies of protein-nucleic acid interactions. She was also coauthor with Shawn Farrell on BIOCHEMISTRY, 8th Edition (Cengage Learning), as well as several editions of GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY by Bettelheim, Brown, Campbell, Farrell, and Torres.

Shawn O. Farrell, a native of Northern California, received his B.S. in biochemistry from University of California, Davis, studying carbohydrate metabolism. He completed his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Michigan State University, where he focused on the study of fatty acid metabolism. Dr. Farrell became interested in biochemistry while in college, as it was relevant to his passion for bicycle racing. He raced competitively for 15 years and now officiates bicycle races worldwide. He has taught biochemistry lecture and laboratory courses at Colorado State University for 16 years and now works for USCycling. Professor Farrell has written scientific journal articles about specific research projects and about laboratory teaching, as well as articles for sports publications, such as "Salmon, Trout, and Steelheader" magazine. He is co-author with Mary Campbell on BIOCHEMISTRY, 7e (Cengage Learning).

Ohmagoodness. A textbook I actually like.
By Rebar
I usually hate the formatting of text books, but I really, really love this one. Instead of having to flip to the glossary in the back to pull key definitions they're given locally in the margins (which means HUGE margins, which means tons of room for my own notes, right in the book. LOVE it.) All the figures and tables are on the same page as the descriptions of said figures/tables (it's a small thing, but it makes life so much nicer). The answers for ALL the chapter questions are in the back (instead of just the odd numbers or whatever) which means I can make sure I'm understanding all the concepts instead of just the odd numbered ones. Thanks for that. And, not gonna lie, I'm a huge fan of the case studies embedded in the chapter. Super nerdy, I know, but I actually really love this book.

Well-paced with good examples and case studies to help you immerse in the material. The organization of the chapters makes it easy to search reference. It has really helped me keep up with a Biochemistry summer course I have been taking.

Synopsis

The legendary martial artist and film star Bruce Lee had many students, but few teachers. Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee, who brought Tae Kwon Do from Korea to the United States in 1956 and has taught over 250 members of the U.S. Congress, is one of those teachers. Bruce Lee and I is Rhee’s intimate, non-fiction, biographical account of the 10-year friendship between these two martial arts legends. The book includes 19 private letters from Bruce Lee to Jhoon Rhee, and Bruce Lee photos from the private Jhoon Rhee Collection, and behind-the-scenes stories about the making of The Green Hornet, The Big Boss, Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury, and other Bruce Lee television shows and films. In this beautifully-designed, mainstream book with mass market appeal, Rhee explains how he taught his friend’s secret punching technique to Muhammad Ali, who then credited “Mr. Jhoon Rhee’s Accupunch” with his knock out of British champ Richard Dunn. “Jhoon Rhee and Bruce had a teacher-teacher relationship, one built on mutual respect.” writes Linda Lee Cadwell, wife of the late Bruce Lee, in her foreword. The book has 15 chapters, 22 photos, 19 reproductions of private letters that include Bruce Lee’s poetry, an index, and footnotes.

About the Author
Grand Master Jhoon Rhee

Grand Master Jhoon Rhee, age 69, is the “father” of Tae Kwon Do in the United States, where there are now 5,000,000 active participants (Korea Herald). Master Rhee has twice been featured in Parade Magazine (circulation 50,000,000) including the cover feature with photo on March 16, 1997. In August 1999 he was awarded the prestigious lifetime achievement award by Martial Arts Professional and described as “a living embodiment of the benefits of the martial arts way of life.” Master Rhee designed and introduced safety gear into martial arts, which is credited with broadening the sport and exercise activity into a mass market appeal. He has been teaching martial arts in the Congressional Gym to Members of the U.S. Congress for 34 years, 3 days a week, and does 1,000 push-ups a day, 500 sit-ups, breathing exercises and a daily fitness program called RheeShape: The Balanced Life Program. He introduced Tae Kwon Do to the former Soviet Union in 1991 and has returned 18 times to teach and promote the sport, oversee the development of Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do Schools, and give motivational speeches. The Jhoon Rhee USO Show entertained U.S. troops in South Korea and visited Japan in the summer 1999, in a manner similar to the Bob Hope USO Shows of the past. Master Rhee travels regularly throughout the U.S., Canada, and the C.I.S., giving seminars to martial arts studio owners and other professionals. He is also an accomplished musician, performing classical music on the harmonica.

Entertaining read.
By W. McMillin
Jhoon Rhee was a friend of Bruce Lee's. Bruce Lee did more for martial arts in the west than perhaps anyone else. The image of Lee is still recognized almost thirty years after his death. This book covers the time of Lee and Rhee friendship and a the short time afterwards. One is not going to learn any big secrets about either but will learn more about the human side of both. It is a quick and easy read. I am not sure why this book has such a huge price on it as it is still in print. You can find it through the TKD Times website and buy it for about $20.oo. A nice collection to either your Bruce Lee or Jhoon Rhee libraries. It has always been obvious that TKD kicks were part of Bruce Lee's study of martial arts.

    From Publishers Weekly
In his latest, author and columnist Peters (Fighting for the Future) puts the contemporary conflict between Islam and the West into the context of 14 centuries of warfare, making a clear and compelling case for rethinking the U.S. approach. When Muslim armies exploded out of Arabia in the 7th century, the armies of Dark Age Europe didn't know how to stop them. While the Muslims fought as a unified, cohesive army, the Europeans were loyal only to their feudal lords, fighting in small units, or simply man-to-man; fast-forward to the present of Iraq and Afghanistan, where the U.S.-led coalition is the unified force, while Islamist fanatics work as disorganized bands, attacking each other as often as coalition targets. Contrary to what Western leaders may think, Peters insists, the war on terrorism is a war of religion-at least for militant Islamists. From this vantage, Peters takes Western leaders to task for a 60 year policy of rational negotiation; in Peters's thorough analysis, the War on Terror is an emotionally-driven endeavor, and an effective strategy for victory will only arise once political and military leaders recognize the motives, internal and historical, that drive our foes.

    From Booklist
This collection of essays, articles, and columns by a former military intelligence officer is subtitled Middle-Eastern Islam vs. Western Civilization because Peters believes present conflicts in the Middle East are but the latest battles in a 1,400-year-old war. The unifying theme of the pieces is that failure to understand that fact, historical illiteracy in American society at all levels, and insistence on dealing with Islamic and other non-Western cultures using Western values has led to a great waste of lives, time, and money for much of the past 60 years, in particular, the past 9. Peters supports the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, and these pieces were written to convince. They should not be dismissed as propaganda, for they offer insights into the Middle East mess that should be considered, from a writer who is an experienced hand with both fiction (e.g., The War after Armageddon, 2009) and nonfiction. --Frieda Murray

Must Read Analysis of the 21st Century's Defining Conflict
    By Jerry D. Morelock
Ralph Peters shows once again why he is today's most insightful strategist on global affairs in his latest "must read" collection representing his best columns and articles on today's most vitally important issue - the assault of militant Islam on Western civilization, values and culture. A retired U. S. Army intelligence officer whose globe-trotting has gained him valuable first-hand experience in over 70 countries (including Iraq and Afghanistan), Peters is the author of 25 acclaimed books, a regular columnist in newspapers and magazines, and a popular on-air media strategist. While most contemporary pundits seem to be "lost in the weeds," content to carp about battlefield tactics and troop levels, Peters demonstrates his firm grasp of the Big Picture, the fundamental underlying nature of the struggle between militant Islam and the West that began fourteen centuries ago and still rages. Endless War's superb collection of essays, articles and columns - each one carefully selected by the author - represents a priceless primer on the 21st century's defining conflict. Peters' superbly argued introductory essay, "History and Hysteria" -- a plea for the importance of reading and understanding history - is alone worth the price of the book. The author's well-known provocative, hard-hitting, "tell-it-like-it-is" prose style has never been more compelling and revelatory. Endless War should be read by America's political and military decision-makers and by the public at large - before it's too late.

NOW, IF ONLY THE RIGHT PEOPLE READ THIS BOOK...
    By RICH
It’s hard to know just how or where to begin with this book—and this author. It—and he—is that good.

A bit of background. I came to Ralph Peters late (a decade or so after he started publishing) and circuitously, through his Civil War Novels, notably Hell or Richmond. If the man wrote nothing but fiction, that would be plenty. His novels are top-notch, better, by far, than most of the best-selling vampire-meets-new woman-meets-black ops/mercenary-meets fantasy gnome army formula stuff on the drug-store shelves. So, right away, you’ve got someone special pounding away on the keyboard, here.

To the book: by spring, 2015, as I write this, Endless War (and please forget about the “Middle Eastern Islam” tag-line. There’s much, much more here) is OLD. The original magazine pieces that comprise the book were on the racks in 2007-2009 and were collected and published here in 2010. However—buy it and read it anyway, because, as the French adage goes, “Plus a change, plus c'est la mme chose.”
Yes, indeed: the more things change, the more they stay the same. In fact, some of the many changes in the geo-political-military spheres in the last ten years or so make this book, in some ways, more fascinating than I’m sure it was when editors were poring over Peters’ submissions.

The man is the real deal and here that means a genuine iconoclast, and he’s got the audacity to butcher sacred military cows, rip the lid off tried-and-not-so-true political stumbling and snort at (especially) the political correct and oh-so-sensitive sentiments that GUARANTEE the promise of the book’s title: Endless War. And he's got the research and studies to back up everything he says.

Just a few snippets to persuade you to click “Add To Cart”:
In the piece about the man he calls “the world’s most effective leader” (Why Putin Should Scare Us) Peters provides an insightful profile (Sept. 2008) that explains what happened just recently, almost SEVEN YEARS AFTER he wrote this piece, when Putin’s forces “assisted” the pro-Russia contingent in the Ukraine. Get this: “...Putin belongs to a long tradition of aggressive Russian nationalists...I’m awed by his ability to analyze opponents and anticipate his reaction to his gambits...” Peters is talking here about “the dismemberment of Georgia” (remember that, hmm??) but he could have been talking about the day-before-yesterday incursion into the Ukraine. But it’s not just Putin’s plan to “reconstruct the empire of the czars” that has the iconoclast’s attention, but the truism that “Putin is foolish for relying on oil, gas and mineral revenue while failing to diversify his economy.” However, Peters insists, “He prefers a wealthy government to a wealthy society. Putin can control a handful of oligarchs...but a diversified economy would decentralize power.” Ah, but the Prime Minister has faults. Read and discover them, too...

Then there is Peters’ “stop-the-nonsense” approach to the drug war waged against the Mexican cartels, in Border Bloodbath, which, by Peters’ reckoning, had taken 8,000 lives “in two years”, which means, up to March, 2009. What’s the body count six years later, I wonder? Many pieces, such as this one, are short: 3 pages long, but those pages are packed with no-bull**** punches, fearlessly predicting that “If President Felipe Calderon’s brave efforts fail, the next President south of the border will be a tool of the narco-terrorists." Well, Calderon DID fail. His replacement, Enrique Pea Nieto, while shifting the focus to police corruption, is likely failing, too. Is he a tool as Peters’ suggests? Well, if his police corruption strategy (certainly valid, down there) is simply a diversion, then perhaps...

“The Halfway War.” is ostensibly about Israel’s sputtering response to the Hezbollah threat back in 2009—on the eve of Netanyahu’s rise to the office of Prime Minister (he recently won his recent re-election by “playing tough” so maybe he read Peters...) the piece is really about ANY country which fails to follow through against its enemies (Desert Storm comes to mind.) Peters declares, “Israel broke a fundamental rule of all warfare. He who is unwilling to pay the butcher’s bill promptly will pay it with compound interest in the end.” And so it has come to pass in Iraq...

And finally, the piece that, in itself, is worth the price of the book, an hilarious but oh-so-accurate set of instructions for those who do battle against “faith-fueled terrorists” entitled, Taliban from Outer Space (please feel free to substitute any of the following for Taliban: Boko Haram, ISIL, Al shabaab, Islamic State.) No “spoilers” here, but take my word: it is an outrageously clever, dead-on-target way of perceiving the enemy that too few western military minds can comprehend.

If you think the length of this review saves you the trouble of reading this book, think again. There are over 30 pieces within its 273 pages. “Food for thought” doesn’t come close to describing the cover-to-cover banquet laid out by this prescient, perceptive writer.

    Titillating and undeveloped
    By Edmund Jimenez
First, may I say that I hold Ralph Peters in the highest regard. His erudition is stimulating; his writing and turn of phrase are delightful. Over the last five years or so, I've read virtually everything that he has written.

However, I was very disappointed in *Endless War* because its potential was never realized. I mean that his essays' various arguments and other assertions were insufficiently supported. I should point out that I am in accord with most of those arguments and assertions. Still, more background and supporting material should have been offered to the critical reader, in order to make his arguments more compelling.

To accomplish the above, I think that it would have been necessary to double the size of the book. The requisite time and work might have been rejected for who knows what reason(s). The essay format found in this book, by its nature, leaves the sympathetic reader wanting more, and the skeptical reader unconvinced.

This book is worth reading because the history under discussion should excite the reader and encourage him to pursue the various subjects on his own. Unfortunately, the author gives the interested reader no help since an index and notes section are absent.

Ultimately, although passionate, this collection lacks enough depth to be satisfying.
