Unfinished Utopia is a social and cultural history of Nowa Huta, dubbed Poland's "first socialist city" by Communist propaganda of the 1950s. Work began on the new town, located on the banks of the Vistula River just a few miles from the historic city of Krak�w, in 1949. By contrast to its older neighbor, Nowa Huta was intended to model a new kind of socialist modernity and to be peopled with "new men," themselves both the builders and the beneficiaries of this project of socialist construction. Nowa Huta was the largest and politically most significant of the socialist cities built in East Central Europe after World War II; home to the massive Lenin Steelworks, it epitomized the Stalinist program of forced industrialization that opened the cities to rural migrants and sought fundamentally to transform the structures of Polish society.

Focusing on Nowa Huta's construction and steel workers, youth brigade volunteers, housewives, activists, and architects, Katherine Lebow explores their various encounters with the ideology and practice of Stalinist mobilization by seeking out their voices in memoirs, oral history interviews, and archival records, juxtaposing these against both the official and unofficial transcripts of Stalinism. Far from the gray and regimented landscape we imagine Stalinism to have been, the fledgling city was a colorful and anarchic place where the formerly disenfranchised (peasants, youth, women) hastened to assert their leading role in “building socialism”—but rarely in ways that authorities had anticipated.

About the Author
Mike Tenbusch is the CEO of Uncommon Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm helping urban schools, churches, and impact organizations create strategies to improve conditions and outcomes for kids. Born and raised in Detroit, he has had a life-long calling to make Detroit a better place to be a kid and to raise a family, and he served as chief impact officer for United Way in Southeastern Michigan as part of his twenty years of leading change in the city. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Mike co-founded Think Detroit (now Detroit PAL), an organization that now serves 14,000 children each year. He also served on the Board for Detroit Public Schools, helped a charter school district graduate more than ninety percent of its first high school class, and created a plan and led the effort to turnaround the city's most challenged high schools. Named one of Crain's 40 under 40 in 2008, he launched a training center for young people in partnership with best-selling author, Mitch Albom. He and his wife, Maritza, live with their three children outside Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Gorgeous pictures, too much detail

This book is beautiful -- it has incredibly clear photographs and other illustrations. The down side is it has way too much detail. I am a first year dental student, and I find this book pretty much impossible to read. It's probably somewhat readable for more advanced students/professionals, but it's definitely not for my level.

If you're of the idealistic bent that believes that the best ideas always win out, or that the products and services that companies and non-profits produce always represent the best they can possibly do, then this book is not for you. For the rest of us, those of us who at some point will have to convince someone else of the value of our ideas, this book is indispensible.

The title: this is not a book for professional advocates, that is, lawyers. It is designed for people who have ideas to share, and are trying to figure out how to get them implemented. Which is almost everyone but lawyers.

For better or worse, I read a lot of business "best-sellers," and this book is far superior to most. Why? Unlike many, if not most business books, the advice in this book is:

Actionable. So many business books speak in vapid generalities (E.g., "the key to leadership is courage; to be a great leader, be courageous". Sounds great, less filling. Daly provides a near endless supply of very specific, very concrete advice for advocates, from where to sit at a meeting, to how to dress, to the kind of language to use, etc.

Research-based. A lot of Daly's advice is counter-intuitive (e.g., people may judge your competence less by what you actually say than by who you're seen hanging around with. But it is all rooted in the results of research by social psychologists, communication researchers, organization development specialists, etc.

Readable. Daly has the gift of great college professors: he wears his knowledge and expertise lightly. Despite the weighty wisdom on which it is based - the book has the depth and richness of a textbook - it reads more like a business best-seller.

Realistic and honest. Academics in the behavioral sciences are cashing in these days with business best sellers. And while often well-written and enthusiastic, these authors can't help having a little bit of academic arrogance creep in: isn't it amazing what we've discovered? And hey, do what we say and you'll become... successful, popular, rich, famous, [fill-in the blank]. Daly has none of that; over and over again he makes the limits and boundaries of suggested behaviors clear.

Two final notes. First, while Daly covers all the bases of advocacy, his heart and enthusiasm are clearer in some chapters than in others. For example, his chapters on building a personal brand ("Build Your Reputation, Create a Brand,") and the role of coming across confidently in successful advocacy ("Demonstrate Confidence,") are superb, providing insights and behavioral tips that you'd probably only be able to get from an elite executive coach costing thousands of dollars. But his chapter on telling your story, however necessary, simply doesn't provide the same level of insight (you don't need a consultant to tell you that if you're going to tell a story, tell it well.)

Second, if this book suffers from anything, it is the vice of its virtues. That is, this book has so many insights and behavioral tips, that one could easily be overwhelmed trying to implement them all at the same time. The best way to use it is to focus on the two-three behaviors most likely to help you in particular in selling your idea, and thoroughly master them before moving on to the next one.

That said, if you are ever going to be in a situation where someone has to choose among ideas, including yours, this is a must have book. Because if you haven't read it, the odds are someone with a competing idea will have. And then, you might as well pack up and go home.

First published in French in 1611, Jussie’s Short Chronicle is translated here for an English-speaking audience for the first time, providing a fresh perspective on struggles for religious and political power in sixteenth-century Geneva and a rare glimpse at early modern monastic life.

Great Book

Too bad the world can't understand how bad dairy products are for you with all the chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, etc that are injected into animals and these are ingested by us as well and causes unbelievable health problems. If you have sinus problems, they stem from dairy.
This is a wonderful book that really opens eyes. I knew about this book 20 years ago but lost my copy so purchased to have in my library.

American investigation into milk industry

A very detailed book looking at the milk industry and discussing possible adverse effects of dairy products. Emphasis on the political drama unfolding when the industry perceives a threat to its lucrative business. I found it too detailed and got bored with all the tooing and froing between both parties. I suppose it is a point that has to be made underlining how much the dairy industry is worth and repercussions should dairy be found conclusively to be linked with hormonal cancers.

Republican's - Listen Up for 2016

I never thought I would see this in print, put there by my own hand – but Trump is becoming a breath of fresh air.

I read this book, to get a feel for the individual, and where he is coming from, since he is hoping to run for President 2016 on the Republican ticket. I wanted to see why he felt he was qualified to be our next President in 2016. A politician – he isn’t.

But well-educated, with a long-and-strong suit at dealing with, and understanding finance in a variety of global countries – he is. He defines himself as a person with a broad experience base in global finance, who has also had to deal with global politics AND foreign policy – in order to accomplish his goals. And with billions in personal net worth – maybe we should start believing what he says.

He is like no other in Washington, in that he needs the job of President, like a hole in the head – but he is fed up, with what Washington politicians have made of America. And he wants a chance to fix the problem.

Where other politicians go to Washington to get rich, line their pockets with side deals, and gain power – Trump already has all that. So what is his pitch in the book?

He wants the America back, that we all knew and loved, and lost, courtesy of the political element that has invaded Washington – and in some cases, made a permanent home there, peddling their ideas, and making their fortune altering American foreign and domestic policy, at the taxpayer’s expense.

D.T. states what he would do to get that America back. He explains foreign policies that have been poorly handled, and tells how he would have handled the situation. He uses fact, not fiction, and the book is well documented, with accurate footnotes which were not ‘lifted’ out of context, to make a different sense, in his book. The book is written in active voice – so once you pick it up – you won’t be able to easily put it down.

He states the flaws he sees in the political thinking currently in Washington, in both parties, brings up the policies and people by name, that created the messes – and states how he feels the policies should have been written, and how the situations should have been handled.

He is surprisingly well-versed on both the policies and the people – and his solutions are something that I think Congress and the Senate should have a look at.

This man is a “dealer”, and global trading has been his game, but in the financial sector. Trump has had far more experience dealing with issues of a global financial matter, than the current Republican favorite Walker (no offense to Walker but he is a bit shy on experience in the global arena) – and if we judge Trump, by his net worth – he’s damn good in this global arena when it comes to finance.

Countries worldwide are only political successes – if they are financially stable with competent leadership. Around the globe, we are all aware of those countries who now aren’t countries anymore because of poor leadership that had no sense how to financially keep the place in order. America is way over-extended financially, and the guys who usually wind up in Washington, are more concerned about keeping their job in the next term, than they are whether the deal is coming out ok for middle-class America. Trump doesn’t need to worry about keeping his job – he can buy the best financial minds in the country – to run it, while he is away, running our shop, in Washington – if he wins 2016.

He doesn’t need our money, to finance his campaign – he already has more than he needs.

This is the type of presidential candidate America has been waiting for – one who is educated, with global financial experience, who has had to understand global financial and trade policies, to deal on a world front to make and keep his own financial empire in tact – and one who now wants to put America back together, by altering those policies that are out of whack, that have taken our manufacturing off our shores, and that have unemployed or underemployed millions of Americans.

Bottom line, if Trump has been able to keep his personal financial house in order – to the extent he could buy and sell everyone in Washington thrice over – maybe we should seriously consider this guy and his thoughts for our next Republican president. Hillary wouldn’t know what hit her.

I’m glad I read this book – through reading this book, written by D.T. himself – I now have a sense that the individual who wants to be our President, does, in fact, have the intelligence, experience in global policy matters that count, and a personal financial success track record that proves he understands foreign policy – that the rest of America wishes it had. He expresses himself very well; he is concise, to the point, and documents his points very well. And best of all – he is used to getting to “yes” – he doesn’t accept no, when it comes to dealing – and America badly needs that type of individual right now.

In the end – it doesn’t matter what the Republicans, or the Democrats, or Hillary, or the press thinks of this guy. What matters is how we, the American voters view this guy – so don’t let them lead you off course – the book will show you the individual named D.T. in his own words.

If you want America back – I suggest you give it a read. He speaks the middle-class language!

A Look into the Real Donald Trump

This book was written and published prior to Comrade Obama’s election for a second term. This 2015 edition has some new material added, but the original text has been retained. The book dispels the liberal’s claim that Trump is, “faking it” or “flying by the seat of his pants”. At least six years ago his message was the same as it is today. This book is a look into the real Donald Trump and not what you would expect.

They want the world hating America because it serves their purpose

It's time to get tough, in the context of our good American ethical worldview. Unfortunately, we've had leaders which make us look like warpig bloodthirsty scum, who have drained our ethical cache. Like when "stormin norman" started saying how killing civilians was just a thing "collateral damage", and Madeleine Albright how half a million dead kids was a "price worth paying". Absolute nonsense. We don't think like that. They do these things on purpose to make us look like scum to the rest of the world. They want the world hating America because it serves their purpose. No, we're not like them. They cheat their way into power, tell us everything's going to be great, then they become bloodthirsty demons. No more.
